Jim Biersdorf (harmonica) and Jim Kolbe (acoustic guitar) have become Columbus Blues icons. Both are lifetime members and have served as officers of the Columbus Blues Alliance. They've been playing blues together for 15 years and show no signs of stopping. In fact, they have added another dimension to their music by adding an upright bass Scott Brammer and percussionist Dave West on occasions as the Bierdorf & Kolbe Band.
The Jims play at the annual Acoustic Jim Biersdorf Jim Kolbe Blues Jam at the Thirsty Ear Tavern "The Jims" "We've been in 300+ bars in the last 12 years and we've played in most of them!" says Kolbe. The Jims met in 1987 at a Columbus Blues Alliance meeting and played together for the first time at the Jam that followed. Jim Kolbe, a founding member of the CBA, says he's had the pleasure to play with most national acoustic acts but has the most fun playing with Biersdorf. The Jims have played every blues venue in Central Ohio, most of the festivals, and private parties too. They present Blues in the Schools programs for the CBA (see THIS article) which teach young people about the history, construction, and diversity of blues music. Biersdorf plays all Hohner harmonicas and Kolbe plays a Taylor 314-C acoustic, a Dobro brass body resonator, and a Regal wood body resonator, and occasionally uses a Fender Blues Junior amp. Jim Kolbe hosts an acoustic Open Stage and Jam at the Thirsty Ear Tavern the second and fourth Sunday of each month, and you never know who you're going to catch them with on stage!
