AND THIS IS THEIR STORY: Columbus based roots fusion band Soul Satyr has finally filled their lineup after over a year of searching, recruiting, auditioning, and selecting nine of the finest musicians to be found in the area. The wall of sound they create hearkens back to the glory days of blues, soul, and rock. The band has numerous influences, all represented in the original music that stands on its own as truly unique American music that is hard to categorize.
Soul Satyr are: John McNamee – Vocals, Guitar Brian Duress – Drums John Thomas – Percussion Steve Wald – Bass, Vocals, Harmonica Jason Shaw – Hammond Organ Cliff Woods – Lead Guitar Ted Basinger – Trombone Raymond Powell – Saxophone John Bonham – Trumpet
Founder Johnny Mack describes the recruiting process as “tedious, even with alcohol involved,” and the success in putting the lineup together was part luck and part hard work. Any band would be lucky to have this cast of characters. The attitude of the band is very positive and there is a lot of good creative energy to work with.
One of the the unique things about the band comes from original songwriting that gets all nine members involved in the creative process. Their demo recording “ Back Of The Line ” was completed in February, with six of the band’s best original works. They will hit the studio again quickly in the spring in order to capture the additions of the horn section and new original songs. The full album “ Seven Nights ” will feature ten songs, and will be the vehicle that takes the band on its journey into the unknown.
Recently, Soul Satyr recorded “ Soul Satyr - Live 2004 ” at The Blues Station with the help of engineer Eric French and Oath Studios. This compilation of eight original songs and three cover tunes make a solid statement about where the band is musically. It is a true live recording with no overdubs or piped in crowd noise, just stripped down to the bare essence of their live performance. It is available at all Soul Satyr live shows.
The band will be appearing regularly at the best Columbus venues, ready to lay it on the line.
